<image:title>Musings - a brooding threnody to the disappearing joy of reading - What I miss most is the tactile and spatial memory that physical books offer. With a printed book, I can see and feel my progress, the shifting balance of pages, the visual placement of passages, and the subtle cues that help anchor ideas in the mind. Even the faint scent of an older book contributes to the sense of inhabiting a tangible object. On a screen, each page feels uniform and almost interchangeable, and that loss of spatial orientation leaves me feeling slightly unmoored. Simple actions such as moving back and forth between sections also feel less intuitive, requiring several taps rather than a quick physical gesture.</image:title>
<image:caption>At the same time, I remain aware that continuing to purchase and store large numbers of physical books may not be practical. The logistical demands are real. Yet this self-imposed restraint has had an unexpected consequence, a subtle diminishment of identity and joy. I want to experience books as sources of pleasure and companionship, not merely as instruments for acquiring knowledge.</image:caption>

<image:title>Musings - where I’m at—cinema, books, et al. - Reading this was a feeling of hiraeth because it transported me to my parents’ home where I was surrounded by the comfort of family and books. And while I was working my way through Kurosawa’s life in words, I ended up watching two more of his films, those being: Seven Samurai and Stray Dog. The kind of personal perspective I was able to glean as I read the book and watched his films is an inimitable experience. It was almost as if I was able to “feel” the films as they were being made and Kurosawa’s vision itself.</image:title>
<image:caption>To me, it has become unequivocal and undeniable that Kurosawa was unabashedly earnest, stoic, and a prolific screenwriter and film director who had great faith in his actors and never shied away from openly showing his gratitude to his mentors and the people who helped him realize his stories despite the repercussions of the World Wars and the American propaganda that the Japanese were so resistant towards.</image:caption>

<image:title>Musings - where I’m at—cinema, books, et al. - However, this lack of direction was coincidentally and quickly resolved by my ever-resourceful supervisor who has been going through the first draft of my dissertation. He pointed out that I do need to know how nation-states were formed in Europe and North America and insert a page or two about it in one of my initial chapters.</image:title>

      <image:title>About - About</image:title>
<image:caption>My name is Kastoori Barua, and I am based in London, Ontario. This website began as a space where I wrote for myself about the things that move me, and it continues to serve that purpose, though it now also functions as a kind of personal archive. I completed my PhD in the Department of English and Writing Studies at the University of Western Ontario, which I defended in early March 2025. My doctoral research examined the nexus between visual aesthetics and literary depictions of migration, belonging, and identity, approached through various philosophical lenses of hospitality across media forms. Beyond the ambit of academia, I am broadly interested in the relations between art, aesthetics, and society, and in the dialectics that emerge within cultural studies. Formerly an art curator and critic, I am especially drawn to hyper-contemporary conceptual art and to the artistic representation and framing of migrants in post-migration contexts. My ongoing intellectual and professional endeavor is to identify or create ways of integrating theory to praxis, thereby reintroducing a politico-philosophical valence to art. Outside of my professional and cerebral pursuits, I enjoy watching F1, anime, and practicing archery. You can reach me at kbarua2(at)uwo(dot)ca Updated on: 02.26.2026</image:caption>

Festivities feel real when there’s special food being prepared and decorations in place with the ones who mean the most to you. It’s been a few years since I got buzzed with the family. <image:caption>This was one of the first Polaroid photos that I took when Kubrick (Lomo’Instant Automat Glass Magellan edition) arrived in December, 2020. Taken atop my apartment building, The saturated greens and blues come together to become a kind of Rothko painting. Not as portable as a Fujifilm Instax camera, Lomo’Instant has a superior lens that leans towards artistic “defects” (for the lack of a better word). This photo vaguely reminds me of Hokkaido when I visited Japan in 2000. Shot with Kubric.</image:caption>

<image:caption>"In French, in old French — nobody uses it anymore — but it means a brook, a very small stream. It's pronounced differently in Vietnamese, and is commonly used by mothers to soothe their children. It means a lullaby, or to lull your child to sleep, and I just thought it was such a beautiful word, a poetic word, but used every day." -Kim Thuy Lately, I’ve been visiting the banks of a stream a couple of kilometers from where I live almost every evening to witness the sundown. There’s a specific place where I always sit, right behind some wistfully lavender flowers growing gingerly at the very edge of the bank. My emotions change with the colors of the sky and the temperature around me. During the pandemic, this stream has been my succor much like the lullabies that mothers sing to their children. 13 April 2021 Shot with Kubrick.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kashmir is truly a dreamscape of verdant undulating valleys, softly lit pastel skies, and shimmering waters. This photo was taken on my birthday as I sat with a dear friend I had met after half a decade on the edge of the lake. My favorite memory in all of Kashmir was indisputably the Shikara ride. To be at leisure with a cup of qahwah as the boat traverses the still waters of the lake is an inimitable, magical experience. Kashmir’s immense beauty sadly melded with its immense conflict that has become inextricable from its identity as a Union Territory in distress. To me, this photo will forever bleed both sadness and pain through its heartbreaking beauty amidst the silence of the place and its people.
